Does ginkgo biloba help?

A myALZteam Member

I can't say how it affects people with Alzheimer's but I have taken gingko biloba myself to improve my memory. It made me more paranoid and sensitive (I'm schizophrenic) so I stopped taking it.

I have been giving it to my father in the evenings to help him sleep and I also take it to help me "relax" and take the edge off caregiving.

Caregivers: Are You Taking Meds To Cope With Being A Caregiver? If So, What Are You Taking And Is It Helping?

A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭
Long Island, NY

The situation is stressful, but the whole idea is upsetting: that I should medicate myself because I'm forced to cope with two who have cognitive impairments. A prescription was called in, but when I went home and read about the possible side-effects, I decided not to pick it up and to ask what my fellow caregivers here are doing, regarding medications.

Edited to add this… read more

Has Anyone Experienced Significant Weight Loss With Their Loved One Even Though They Eat Very Very Well?

A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭
Guelph, ON

Owen is in late stage Alzheimer’s. In the last 4 or 5 months he has lost 13 lbs. 10% of his body weight.
He literally eats like a horse with no changes over this time period. I read about cachexia which is when the body doesn’t absorb nutrients properly anymore. Supplements seem to agitate him. Have you experienced this and what did it mean to you? Did it continue, find a level? Improve?

Thank you.

CBD And Low Dose Lithium

A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭
Pasadena, CA

We still have not been able to see the 'memory care' team, and won't until mid November, and still don't have a formal diagnosis, just test results. I have been researching on my own, I have seen articles about using CBD and sometimes including THC and also low dose lithium which seems to have some ability to work on plaques and tau. Anyone have any experience with this. The most severe damage for my husband indicates that there may be a propensity to outbursts and violent behavior as this… read more
