Caregivers: Are You Taking Meds To Cope With Being A Caregiver? If So, What Are You Taking And Is It Helping?
This caregiver has been told that I should consider taking meds to deal with having two loved ones on a progression. The situation is stressful, but the whole idea is upsetting: that I should medicate myself because I'm forced to cope with two who have cognitive impairments. A prescription was called in, but when I went home and read about the possible side-effects, I decided not to pick it up and to ask what my fellow caregivers here are doing, regarding medications.

I take 50mg generic Zoloft daily: works for me - fewer meltdowns. It’s a huge load we carry. House & yard is a lot at 80 - hire a lot more help this year. Count my blessings that I can.
To Everyone: THANK YOU for sharing your information.
Here are our results, to date:
I love all of these posts, particularly ShirleyBertacchi with the tequila. I
have thought about drinking but I'm loopy after 2 glasses of wine and I don't
need to be loopy to take care of my husband. I take wellbutrin and have
been for years. I was a very volatile person before and wellbutrin has helped me
feel normal - no ups or downs -- just an even keel. And so what if you
gain a little weight - it's not like I'll be going out, at my age, to look for
another man. I couldn't finid a better one than I have had and I'd probably
wind up having to take care of him, too. Ditto for the sexual malfunction.
I'm 78 and my husband is 80 --- give me a break ! who cares about sex. ha
ha ha ha. I take it one day at a time and when something rears its ugly head,
I do what I can about it and that's all any of us can do. Don't get me wrong --
I get tired and sometimes sad, but my husband saw me through breast cancer
and a quadruple bypass so I owe him big time ! ! I just hope I am around
to take care of him as long as he needs taking care of.
I hope the new med helps. It’s always good to start at a low dose and move the dose up as needed. That’s how my PCP orders this type of med also. Good luck.
@A myALZteam Member: Thank you. I really hope that chart, and all of the input that went into it, will be useful to someone who's new to myALZteam and reaches the point of needing to consider medications. And I hope that everyone who provided input feels that they contributed to an important and good project.
As to me: I'm still in research mode, but certainly haven't ruled anything out (other than Lexipro, which wasn't good for you, either!) Yesterday I had an in-person consultation with my local pharmacist, a long discussion, and he recommended that I think about the two meds that happen to be the "top 2" on our list above (Wellbutrin &/or Effexor) -- so I found THAT very interesting, in light of our group project. I also sent a message to my Primary Care Physician, to see what his thoughts are. But I'm really going to try to get my husband into a Day Care program, so I can have some personal space. With two of them to care for and do for, I think that is what I need most.
