Does Anyone Have Experience With A Spouse That Has Alzheimer's Disease, Using A Waterpik Vs A Manual Tooth Brush And Floss?
I tried an electric tooth brush with my spouse with AD, but he kept scrubbing his teeth like it was a regular tooth brush. With his manual tooth brush he scrubs very hard on the sides and forgets to brush the front teeth. When I try to help him brush the front teeth he sucks on the tooth brush. He no longer flosses and the dentist suggested a waterpik. Has anyone had success with an Alzheimer's spouse and waterpik? Any suggestions or experience? Thank you.
@A myALZteam Member: In that case, my suggestion would be to buy yourself a waterpik and see how it feels, how it works, etc. Then you can determine whether or not your husband could handle it, or if maybe you might be able to use it on him. (Warning: I would suggest both of you stand in the shower or you'll have water all over the bathroom! LOL)
My hubby uses a waterpik, but he's used one for years and is still able to handle a toothbrush. It might be tricky, if your husband has never used one before. I don't know how well my own hubby will do with it as time goes on -- but at his last visit, the dentist and I agreed that the cleanings by the dental hygienist should be increased from twice a year to three times a year; and eventually, the professional cleanings will be done four times a year.
Hi Helen, Thank you for your reply. Neither of us have ever used a a waterpik before, so I do wonder how tricky it would be. And same here, my husband will have the increased cleanings with the dental hygienist.
LOL! Thank you for your reply and suggestions, it's all greatly appreciated.
