My Husband Is Now At The Stage Where He Is Messing His Pants. What Are People Using For This? Depends Or Something Similar?
@A myALZteam Member, I use men’s Depends with an extra pad inside for daytime, and Nightime Depends at night for my husband. I realized pretty quickly that I needed to buy these in bulk, as he goes through them! He seems to like them, although I don’t think he is aware of actually why he’s wearing them. I probably should get some sort of diaper pail because I go through a lot of grocery-style plastic bags to dispose of them.
Besides Depends, some caregivers find success in determining WHEN the person soils...if X number of hrs/minutes after a meal, then get him in the toilet. It may save a few Depends, and less times you will need to clean him.
I use Depends for my husband. He is usually continent during the day but isn't as careful as he should be pulling it down far enough. My bigger problem is that at nighttime he will pull the Depend down so when he goes the entire bed gets wet!! Pads are helpful but don't always stay in place. I know there are some with adhesive tape but they're even more expensive.
There is something called Anosagnosia…
It is a real thing . My loved one has it .. In the reality he lives in , THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH HIM … It is not the same as denial.. In his broken brain ,to him , it’s a real . There are so many things I learned thru Caregivers meetings . One of the most important ones is the difference between things that we believe they WON’T do but in reality they are things that they CAN NO LONGER do .
I recently had one experience with my husband being incontinent after we returned from our 3 week trip to CT/RI to see family and friends. None since although I did buy men's Depends to have on hand in case needed. It was quite strange in that John didn't acknowledge the incontinence and denied needing help. For me I'm taking it a day at a time. A very difficult problem to deal with for you and your husband. Sending support.
