What Can You Do To Help Your Loved One With Dementia To Expectorate When He Coughs?

When my loved one continues to have pneumonia it is so frustrating as you can hear when he coughs that it comes up in his throat or mouth but he won't spit out for me or the nurses. Is there a technique to get them to spit it on our because the nurse says he is going to continue to have pneumonia over and over until it does him in. He says he can't spit it out when we give him a basin or paper towels or he says he wishes he could. I want him better. Has anyone been successful in getting… read more

Johnny starting coughing up and spitting a lot in the last 5 years. I always got aggravated that he would spit into any trashcan that he saw -- even at restaurants. But maybe I should not complain about that because at least he is getting rid of the mucus / phlegm. He probably wouldn't use a basin either. Maybe keep a little plastic trashcan near his chair and maybe he'll use it.
