Have I Done Enough?
Everything is a learning curve since my husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Friends have given me advice so, years ago Jim and I went to a family planning lawyer to set things in place when we die! Our only child, a 50 year old single mom of a 9 year old son is all set! We didn’t want her to have any problems, so, we both have Powers of Attorney for medical and financial. We have living wills and DNR’s in place. I have filed the POA’s with Social Security, the IRS, and our investment… read more
Weenstra, You do need to ask a attorney these questions.
We had it done many years ago, but decided to update everything. We Got a last will and Testament for both of us. From what I understand it covers A lot. One thing it appoints me to be the personal representative of the estate and mine says that same thing to him. We know he will not be responsible so my Daughters name is on it, so if something happens to me and he is still living, she will automatically be the rep. Then we got the Living will, but we gave ourselves 7 days, if they do not see any change then do not DNR’S. My Daughters name is on everything and if something happened to her, it would be my sister. We have the Durable POA, A Designation of Health Care Surrogate, and a Veterans advance directive. I think this information. handles all the directives, you need. Also allows me to stay in the house until I am unable which my daughter will make that decision. Left some things for my Grandaughter’s. Mine has Durable Power Of Attorney and he does not, my Daughter’s name is on. The atty filed with the courts, so I will never have to go to court or my daughter.
Also to the Bank. I am sure if you went to a estate lawyer he did more for you. This is just some of mine, if you really want to know if you have everything you need to see a Attorney for your own person situation. One thing my husband had to be able to agree with everything, and I had to leave the room and they had two witness in there, and the Attorney. We were done. Did not take that long.
Estate planners are better.
Good luck, stay safe from this terrible virus. I have added you to my team if that is okay with you.
Blessings.
Talk with a lawyer specifically for questions like these. It can be very helpful. We did the same thing, and I had our home put in just my name through the lawyer. Just in case he has to go in a nursing home, this way, you should be covered. But don't delay. Best wishes to you both.
Make sure the POA is Durable POA. There’s a difference.
Weenstra, Thank you.
Laura, that is so good and thoughtful
