Are There Any Facilities That Provide Overnight Care For Alzheimer's Patients?

A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

I would love to take my mother on a much needed vacation for possibly 3-4 days but all I come across is adult day cares. We've reached out to his veterans organization and although they have given us numerous resources that we have applied for, the waiting lists are extremely long.

If you have a caregiver company in your area, you could check into 24 hour care in your home. In some ways, it is less of a hassle as you need to see your doctor one month in advance to go to a facility for respite and the doctor that covers the facility needs to accept you as a patient for those 4 days. I have done it two times now. We don't have a company in our town so I have had to find my own caregivers and some hours covered by friends. Because I still work, I do have at least 5 people I call upon. My main caregiver takes the overnight from 9 at night to 9 in the morning and then I find coverage for the daytime hours. I let the night time person sleep - I don't think she sleeps well but enough to stay on her own schedule. It is not cheap but to get away is priceless!!!

Maybe see if any assisted living facilities have some space? It would make sense for them to do this but I’m not aware of wether any do or not.

Hi Irene. Your local Alzheimer’s Association is a great resource and will help answer your question.

Some assisted living homes have respite care rooms. I took my husband to one in Antioch when I went on vacation. This one had a 7 day minimum stay or pay. Others I checked were 2 week min or very expensive. Call around and hopefully you find a place for him to stay.

Is there an eldercare in your area. Respite is provided by different agencies. Either in a facility or will pay for someone in the home.
