Did I Do The Right Thing?
My Dad has this ongoing issue with reflux and water brash (too much saliva production). Despite working with a speech pathologist, he just spits the stuff out of his mouth constantly. He can go through a 250 sheet box of Kleenex in 2 days. Tonight, he disappeared into his bedroom and I could hear him coughing. It's GERD due to the reflux. He's had it a long time (as do I) and it gets bad enough to make him gag. The excess stuff in his mouth just exacerbates it. He came back out, sat down… read more
Hi I thought I would share something that worked for a dear man I care for who has Alzheimer’s & also Parkinson’s disease. He began to drool excessively which caused him a great deal of distress & his specialist suggested he suck hard boiled lollies! The act of sucking on the hard lolly/lozenges helped lessen the drooling immensely & assisted with swallowing mechanism & the sugars help to thicken the saliva, making it flow less. We have found some sugar free alternatives which work well. If your Dad has choking issues though having a hard lolly may not work so well. For us it was worth a try & we are so glad we did!! We’ve had fun sourcing some ‘healthy’ alternatives!
All the very best to you & yours.
Gibberish is one sign of stroke...ask him to lift his arms....check out all the stroke signs....My mom went thru that while sitting in a hospital and none of the hospital staff realized it....she passed away a week later....
I don’t know, Amy, but I believe I would have done the same. Jackie hasn’t your dad’s issues or history but there have been times when I would have taken a “normal” person to hospital but have chosen to see it through at home. The one time we did go was after a bad fall and I thought she had a skull fracture. The doctor thought she didn’t but because she understands nothing he couldn’t scan / X-ray and he discharged her to my care for observation. I was very grateful for his common sense. Best wishes, S
You did your best. Remember that.
My husband regularly has great difficulty in getting the words out. My thoughts were and still are that it’s the progression of the disease. It’s not there all of the time. It never crossed my mind that it might be the signs of a stroke.
I would think a long wait in A&E would be inevitable if indeed there were no other symptoms. However! As carers Inthink we always feel maybe we could have done more.
All the best!
