Any Ideas On How To Keep My Dad From Spitting Food Out?
My dad gets little pieces of food in his mouth and instead of chewing and swallowing, spits them out, no matter where we are. I try to suggest he use a napkin to spit into (as I hand him one) and he looks at me and spits on the floor.
My Mom does the same thing but spits into her hand at least for now. She also picks & dissects her food and if the pepper is black she won't eat because it is dirty. I give small portions and try to make sure her food is soft and has no parsley or anything like it on it. I give her plenty of apple sauce and I cut her meat really tiny with lots of gravy. Eating with Mom is a production so I try not to eat out.
My Dad also does this , nothing you can do but sit with him when he eats with a tissue at the ready as if you notice he wants to spit he may spit into tissue for you ? my Dad can spit a long way to ... not nice but just the disease 🙁... they will find the tiniest bits and want to spit them out , may be useful to toddler style cut up or mash food , try making things smooth ?
Some of the advice from ALZ ASsoc suggests taking a 5 x 7 card that says ALZ PT you can hold up to the waiter w/o too much awkwardness. Or in your case might want to put note that he sometimes spits his food which has to be cleaned up. Most of the time if they see how much you love your loved one and trying to help they will greatly assist you. More are becoming aware of the disease.
Also sometimes they HOARD food in sides of their mouth, especially toward the end and could lead to aspiration so watch for that as well. Sounds like this is one of those things you have little control over. If in restauraunt, might just tell waiter he has disease and could someone clean it up.
Thank you @A myALZteam Member - I'll give it a try. (Have thought of getting a spitoon).
