I Lost My Mother To Alzheimer’s Two Years Ago. I Am So Afraid Of Going Down This Road Myself. At What Point Do I Get Checked?
There are good tests coming soon that will simplify diagnosis. If you are feeling fine, you might want to think about what you have to gain and what you would do with the information.
There is a strong line of dementia in on my mom's side. I ask myself this question periodically. Good luck.
@A myALZteam Member Same advice from Helen. Just keep to a healthy lifestyle (I know you have many duties to fulfil) and stick to your checkups. If you want, just post to me or Helen and we'll give our opinions.
Hi @A myALZteam Member By my own experience with my wife's family I have become very familiar with those questions. You have a daughter, and I would tell you straight away right now that she comes first in whatever you decide. And that decision is very important and terrifyingly difficult. If you can talk about it on this site, do so as much as you need, because you are not alone with this question. I know of several people in my "Team" who are wrestling with the issues involved, and they are VERY BIG. Don't decide anything, and keep your daughter out of it, until you are very clear in your mind. Check my updates, you will find a bit of flavour about what is involved, but every case is different, and it is important to understand the medical side of Alzheimer's with a fair amount of detail, to grasp the consequences of your decisions. I am happy get back with you on these questions, and I am adding you to my team, to make the communication easier.
I located some members of my birth family through 23&me and learned that my maternal grandmother passed from ALZ. My birth mother died at 28 in a car accident, so I don’t know if she would have been impacted. 23&me also noted that I have two markers on the APOE gene as a possible indicator of late onset. I just try to take care of myself and get checkups. No sense being worried now; hoping there will be more treatments available by the time I might need them. Prayers up for all.
Hello Julia
Quest labs offers the blood test now and it is available.
Unfortunately it is not covered by insurance. (Approx $400.00)
The thing is if you are diagnosed early, in the mild range, the current treatments might help you.
In my wife's case by the time I got her diagnosed she was in the moderate range and the drugs would not help the damage that had already been done.
I hope some day doctors will use the blood test for all women with a family history over 40 years of age. As two thirds of all AD. cases are women, this can't happen soon enough.
Good Luck
