Hi, My Wife Is 58 And Has Been Diagnosed With Severe E/O Alz/Dem. She Is Being Treated With Meds For Anxiety, Depression And Aggression.
Her Neurologist prescribed Duloxitine 60 MG in am. Quetiapine 25 MG in am, 25 MG in afternoon 50 MG at pm and Olanzipine 5 MG at pm. My wife refuses to swallow these, so I have been having to crush the tabs and open the Duloxitine capsule and mix them in applesauce. The Neurologist said this was okay to do and the Duloxitine is not the delayed release
My wife has been on the Duloxitine and Quetipine for about 8 weeks now and they just started the olanzapine last week. Her aggression,… read more
@A myALZteam Member,
My husband ,Tim has recurring UTI and it seems like antibiotics started not working well and his doctor changed it to the different kind of antibiotics few days ago ,,it is too early to say it is not working , but If it doesn’t work , I definitely ask hospice doctor to try D’mannose!!
He has catherter and has more chances to get UTI…he has UTI every month.
Thank you for the good information!
I admire you ! You were such a good husband and caregiver for Vilma! God bless you 🙏
@A myALZteam Member,
My husband was diagnosed when he was 58 and he is 64 now. He was placed to Memory Care since this March ..
His aggression, anxiety , combativeness, hullcinations were so bad .. he used Quetiapine 25 mg for breakfast and lunch then 50 mg for dinner time. He tried other medications for antipsychotic and depression , I forgot some of the name , they made him very talkative and happy but he got trembling very badly and had to stop . Now he is under hospice care since March and I don’t worry about his medications much . He still
takes Quetiapine , but the doctor increased the dose . We crushed all his meds and mixed with apple sauce or ice cream .
Hope you can find the right kind of medication and right dose!
Hey Eric, the cocktail that finally worked for us was Clonazepam and Olanzapine. Everything I administered to her for the last 2 years was crushed and given to her with juice using a large syringe. Her food was blended down and given to her the same way.
Our biggest fight was against recurring UTI’s, which caused severe agitation. It reached a point where antibiotics were no longer effective. Our hospice team suggested we stop fighting and begin comfort care. I had been researching natural treatments for UTI’s and I begged off one more attempt with antibiotics and I added “D’mannose” a natural substance with really no side effects …. she remained comfortable and with minimal medications for another year and a half. The hospice team was amazed at the success of D’mannose and started suggesting it to other patients with recurring UTI’s.
My wife was diagnosed at age 60 in early 2020. She passed away in May 2023. Her disease progressed very rapidly.
We tried several meds before we saw results with Clonazepam (.5 mg twice daily) and Olanzapine (5mg at bedtime) but getting the UTI’s under control was the key to lasting calm.
I kept brief notes on her behaviors and reactions to the meds and conveyed them to the neurologist. She had to determine the source of the behavior… whether anxiety, depression, or hallucinations. I hope you find the right blend.
I wish you well.
Sorry,last post was a slip up.
That’s quite a combination of antidepressant and antipsychotic drugs the doctor’s trying. But I have to give it to them for trying because I it seems like the only way to see what might work. Some of the best success, for agitation and aggression, my late husband had was with a combo of Rexulti and Haldol. It worked for a while and am grateful for that.
Olanzipine
