How Long Should It Take To Be Diagnosed From Your First Dr. Visit?
So far it has been 10 months since I first visited my Dr. with memory concerns. Due to office errors, scheduling errors, insurance, etc. and I still have not had a Neuro Psych evaluation.
It took my julann one year and a month before they did a spinal tap to confirm she had what they say was early onset alzheimer's that took from 2020 September to visiting with only the lrnp to October 10th of 2021 been seen by the same lrnp since every 3 months she finally got approved for disability and got Medicare advantage pla February 1st so when we go back in April I'm going to recommend a pet scan because her short term memory is gone and has trouble finishing sentences and I wanna know what parts of the brain are affected and see the neurologist first hand l demand it dam it
I would think you would already know. I would call the Dr tomorrow.
@A myALZteam Member: Now I'm a little confused, because your profile says "62 years old, and was diagnosed with Early-onset Alzheimer's in 2023." That information is not correct? No matter what, once you have a Neuropsych Evaluation, you'll have a much better idea about what's going on.
First neurologist gave me a 5 questions test. I passed. He told me I was fine.
The second neurologist took 6 months to get an appointment with. Appointment was cancelled because it was not scheduled with the correct doctor. (their fault) Two more months of waiting. This neurologist requested an MRI but insurance refused to pay because I passed the 5 question test. This neurologist was supposed to be specializing in early onset dementia. He did not. His specialty was in migraines. Now I'm on my third neurologist and can't get in for a Neuropsych Eval until the end of April. It's frustrating. By this time, it will be a full year of waiting as I see my mental decline every day.
Make some noise now. Assuming that you only saw a regular, primary care doctor, here's what I would recommend that you do:
a) See a Neurologist.
(Depending on your insurance plan, this might require a referral from your primary doctor.)
b) The Neurologist should order an MRI.
Specifically request a volumetric study.
c) Make an appointment with a Neuropsychologist, for a Neuropsych Evaluation.
(There may be a long wait for the appointment, when it does get scheduled; but at least it will be on somebody's calendar! Sometimes the Neurologist can help to get the testing expedited.)
