What Is The Best Kind Of Doctor To Find Out And Treat The Form Of Dementia One Has?
My wife, who is 81, was told she has Alzheimer's by our primary doctor, who is a "Family Practice Physician." He made that diagnosis by talking with her, and giving her a 4 page test he downloaded from the internet. We've know that there are other forms of dementia, which may be treated differently than Alzheimer's. Are there doctors with different specialties whom we should see to make certain which form of dementia she has, and how better to treat it? Perhaps a geriatric psychologist or… read more
Neurologist.
My primary told me to go to neurologist. I found one specifically for Alzheimer's. You can use heathgrades. Vital signs or web md. You get all the information like where they went to school residency etc. A doctor with a fellowship is even better. Most of them have that. Hope this helps🥰
My mom was aske 5 questions by family doctor. My brother took her. He called me that night and told me she needs to go to neurologist as soon as possible. I took her to neurologist. Did my research first as I always do when a family member goes to new doctor. Found a wonderful educated doctor. They put her on the meds. In the beginning it seemed like it was helping. I don't know if it's because I wanted it so badly an thought that. But now 2.5 years later she is on same meds and at least she tolerated them. Mom never took medicine. But I thin the only one that is doing anything now is the anti anxiety medicine. But I still give it to her. She thinks that she will get better if she takes it. I tell her it's brain food. And she always asks do I have to take medicine. She's so cute sometimes. And the bad days are bad. But I'm greatful to still spend every day with her. Even if there bad days. I quit my job two years ago. I think she's had this for maybe 5 years or so but I worked a lot of hours. Becoming a grandma gets exspensive. I'm lucky to have a wonderful husband. He's kind and patient. But he works a lot. My kids an husband worry about me because they feel it's too much for one person. I'm her only caregiver. But this is a terrible disease. Day by day. Hope everyone has a nice evening 🥰
All those options are still clinically diagnosed. A scan is generally referred by a Neurologist. None are great options for AD sadly. A generic form is widely used by those who do not specialize in dementia and related issues. Blessings to you both
