Aricept

A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

I just started taking 5mg 6 weeks ago without any side effects

Doctor just prescribed moving up to 10mg for the next 6 weeks

That’s a good thing i presume

Curt, I’m not medically qualified, but I’m happy to pass on what Jackie’s doctor told us. Aricept, aka Donepizil was prescribed for her at the time of diagnosis as one of the medicines that can slow the progress of the illness for some people. Like you she started on 5mg then, after a similar time, she moved up to 10mg. Her doctor explained that this medicine isn’t tolerated by everyone. The 5mg starter dose is to see if it is tolerated. The 10mg dose is the therapeutic dose.

Jackie was OK with it, but did say as she settled in that her “head felt full”.

Hope this is helpful. S.

I’m so sorry. I feel better with the Exelon patch.

I couldn’t take aricept. It hurt my stomach bad. Now I wear an Exelon patch, change it everyday.

Mom was on aricept and unfortunately experienced the stomach problems as well. She has been upped to the 10 mg but unfortunately had progressed past the point of it helping her.
