Working With Memory Care Facility
Has anyone had a problem with a Memory Care Facility where they want to get rid of
a loved one because he pays less money than others for his room? First they tried to
evict my Dad and that was illegal and they were cited by Licensing. Now they are trying
to change his room and put him with residents in the lowest level when he is still walking
talking, eating by himself, dressing a little and sometimes even going to the bathroom by
himself. They are making up things and then backing down… read more
Can the doctor act as a liaison with the facility's medical team with his input about how this will impact on your Dad?
Thanks and yes I have done that. The Ombudsman has been a real advocate for my Dad
Thank you everyone - they have decided not to move him after my meeting with the corporate nurse and my Dad’s doctor just hope it doesn’t happen again
This is discrimination, and definitely file a complaint. Also get Dads lawyers and find out what they DID say. If they gave advice against Dads best interest, change his lawyer. They are supposed to work in his interests, no one else. Unless they are taking a bribe? I wish you well with this one.
I experienced some of the same things with my father, but he was evicted from an assisted living facility as opposed to a memory care facility. Unfortunately (as a friend told me who works in the industry), the elder care industry is motivated by heads in beds and not much else. It is my understanding that each resident is supposed to have a service plan. The director is supposed to show through the service plan that they have tried to resolve all issues and show there is proper documentation. Sounds like this director is not doing that. You can request a copy of the service plan If you have power of attorney, or a guardianship/conservatorship, or are your fathers legal representative. If you want to rattle the cage of the director, you can also request a copy from the director of their most recent state survey. Another option for you is to contact your state's ombudsman office. You can report the facility to the ombudsman, and depending on the state, they will either send out a local volunteer or an investigator to validate your claims.
You might also check to see if the memory care facility is a medicare authorized facility (if I remember the verbiage correctly). If they are, they cannot discriminate against your father because he pays the medicare minimums for living in their facility. Unfortunately, though, this does happen.
