How Can I Get My Mother To Eat More. She Has Very Poor Appetite And Eats Very Little Of Her Meals. T
My mother has a sweet tooth and eats puddings well but very little of her main courses and she hardly touches veg now. Unfortunately she doesn't like milky drinks so I'd be glad of any ideas to up her calories intake.
Many times it isn't that they don't like something, but its because the no longer recognize what that food item is. And they have no idea how to eat it. Ivreakuzed that when my sister began refusing her favorites, spaghettispaghetti and tacos. I left them on my plate and left the room for a moment. When I came back, she was trying to eat spaghetti with her fingers. She was embarrassed and started crying. So I sat down and ate with my fingers too. I notice that when she's not sure what something is, she'll wait and watch others eat . then she knows if its a finger food, or needs a fork or spoon.
It's quite usual for the sweet tooth to come out in a person with dementia. Have you tried smoothies or egg custard

My father-in-law loves oatmeal with brown sugar. We have been his caregivers for six months now. He won't touch anything else for breakfast but that. So we give it to him. I give him a large bowl as he doesn't always eat his lunch. He kept trying to feed the cat his meals, his cat now has to be in another room during his meal time. The doctor said to give him whatever he wants... He is 85 years old. Loves beans... So, we try to find what he likes and give him that. Watermelon seems to be his favorite thing for snacks this month.
it sounds like she's having trouble eating more solid foods now. So if she likes eating things like pudding, find foods that have the same consistency. Thick milkshakes, oatmeal, Malt-O-Meal... things like that. You may want to even start blending her food like sausage gravy and biscuits. Those are good things that will stick to her ribs.
