No Knowledge Of Current Month, Date, Day Of Week Or Year

A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭
Parkland, FL

My wife (59) has extreme difficulty knowing what the month, date, day of week or year it is. Difficulty following or remembering immediate short term instruction or conversation. Even though I keep a calendar up to date for her and she understands what the X over each date means she can't figure out that the next Non X date is the current date. She gets stuck in her head upcoming out of town/state trips that are a month or two away but even after I explain how far away the date/time is before… read more

Members shared deeply relatable experiences caring for loved ones who struggle with time orientation and short-term memory, with many describing nearly identical challenges including confusion about dates, premature preparation for upcoming trips, and difficulty managing medication schedules. Several members offered practical solutions that have helped them, including using dementia clocks that display the day and time of day, removing future reminders from view and only mentioning events a few days beforehand, creating daily chalkboards with the day's schedule, using countdown systems for trips, and encouraging activities like reading aloud, puzzles, exercise classes, and music to engage different parts of the brain. A recurring theme was the emotional weight of watching a loved one lose their sense of time and familiar people, balanced by the understanding that patience, creativity, and taking things one day at a time are essential tools for both the person with dementia and their caregiver.

Thank you OB, experiencing similar things with my wife. Lately she ask about her long time doctors and ask who they are and why and I have to remind her, she will repeat the same inquiry again because I think she’s trying to remember an upcoming appointment. Lately she has had trouble remembering long time neighbors (not close relations) and has introduced herself to them as if for the first time. Gets confused and anxious if feels internal or external pressure to complete a simple task. Still very sociable, loves going to gym and working out. Total loss of date and time perception and how it relates to appointments or trips.
And Yes our brains do get a workout lol, but I try to remind myself how worse or frightened my wife must feel while trying to stay on top of her mental/thought process. God bless!

Hi you could consider buying an Amazon Echo and that way your wife can ask it for the day, month year etc and also set a reminder for future outings.

My husband was diagnosed with mild cognitive deficiency and early stage Alzheimer's. He is 67 and on the same medication as your wife. I used to try and go over the calendar with him and go over upcoming trips. Even though we go over it and explain it, it is difficult for them to remember as the disease affects short term memory. I have a chalk
board in the kitchen and write down the day's schedule and doctors appointments. A week before your trip it might be helpful to do a count down so she knows it is coming soon. Something like 7 days before we leave...6 days before our trip to ... etc. I hope this helps.

I have come across exactly the same thing, The person I look after has no idea what date it is. Outings had been planned and the dates stuck on the fridge. She would be constantly taking the reminders off the fridge and showing me them saying 'we have missed this outing' despite the fact they were weeks later. In the end I removed all the reminders and a few days before the outing I would mention that we were going.
