Is There Any Age Related Reason For A Dr. To Not Prescribe Meds For Alzheimer's/dementia?
Mom is 93 but her doctor hasn't prescribed any meds yet. She was diagnosed six months ago in early stages and I am noticing advancing symptoms.
I don't know of any age restrictions, however, at 93, you must weigh the outcomes vs. the side effects. Some meds cause diarrhea, etc.. If she seems content the way she is, perhaps it is okay not to medicate. It may be as much for you, that you want her on something that won't really help in the long run/sam
My mom is on a low dose of donepezil. They had tried to give her more but her eating habits were so bad and she was loosing weight so they lowered it. She is now 72 lbs. and even though she eats more then she ever has she is still loosing weight. The doctor said that as we age lots of people don't care about eating, the drug makes that worse and really takes the desire to eat away so with my Mother being so tiny she felt she could not prescribe a higher dose. Ask her doctor why she hasn't given her anything I found the medical profession was very willing to share information and advise with me. Its been a long journey so far but I sure appreciate the input and make sure you do your research it helps to have the ability to know what questions to ask.
Thank you.
We saw a geriatric specialist, once he had my husband settled into meditation proply, we were told to just continue seeing our gp.
Thanks for your response. I'm wondering why the Dr. didn't give her anything. Were about 6 months into her diagnosis of early onset. Is a neurologist preferred or is a primary care sufficient?
