What Leads Up To Nonverbal In ALZ?

A myALZteam Member asked a question đź’
Houston, TX

My Mom will scream and cry out Mama all night and will have her legs hanging off the bed. When I move her back into bed, she screams bloody murder. Now during the day when she is awake, she will only whisper or move her lips with no sound. Can anyone explain what may be happening? Can this be the start of being non verbal?

Maybe she is feeling claustrophobic in bed? Maybe a couple extra pillows? I know that each person is different in what they do. My Dad use to see people and tell me they wouldn't let him sleep...May he R.I. P...If I read anything similar to your situation, I will contact you ...good luck!

My mom also has advanced progressive aphasia and is barely ever verbal. She'll give me a yes or no (which rarely mean yes or no). She gets soooooooo frustrated, it's heartbreaking. Try more or less covers at night, or extra covers over her feet or shoulders if you think she's cold, the night light is a great idea and so is making sure her clothes are comfy. Mom doesn't scream so I'm not a lot of help there, but it may be her only way of communication at the time. Like with babies, different screams will mean different things. You just have to be as observant as possible to learn the difference. My mom uses different noises (thankfully not loud or something like screaming/hollering that would make me worried).

God Bless you and your family. I hope you get it all figured out.

Rolls her eyes? At first I thought my dad wanted the attention, but his mind was just in a "state" I had no knowledge of.

After a few times of asking, she just seems frustrated and rolls her eyes at me.
