How And Who Decides When My Husband Has To Stop Driving?

A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

We recently sold his truck, which he was managing to drive fairly well. It had low mileage and a good value, so he decided himself that it would be best to sell now. We were down to one car, which was fine with me. My son offered a car he was not driving to my husband so he could just get around town...to golf, store, etc. It is still in my son’s name and under his insurance. I am a nervous wreck when he is out driving. Although he is very careful, doesn’t get lost, his reaction time concerns… read more

Discuss with neurologist or eye doctor. Both can write a letter to dmv and they will revoke it. You don’t have to be the bad guy in this. The doctor will and the dmv.

Let the Doctor or police take the job on, they told me that makes it easier for family. Good luck

It’s really tough. Every patient is so different that it’s really hard to generalize. My husband cut back on Driving his own. Some doctors will advise an occupational therapy assessment because if a third objective party says not to drive, that’s taken a little better. I also read a book “ The Spectrum of Hope” by a neurologist Gayatri Devi. It’s a great book on Alzheimers because it explains things by using stories of her real patients ( with names and exact situations changed). She believes Alzheimers is a spectrum disorder and every patient has to be evaluated as an individual even when it comes to Driving. I think that when doctors deliver the news about no longer Driving, they don’t find out or problem solve how people can get around. Uber and Lyft are expensive but they are options.

My husband has Alz. He gave up driving on his own about 8 months ago. I don't know why or if something happened. I have a friend who's Dr. scheduled a driving test with a special company and that company decided if he could drive or not. It is scary. If your husband has an accident with your son's car, your son and his insurance will be responsible. The insurance goes with the car. I was an agent. If you have a trustworthy insurance agent, then go and talk to him about the risk with your company.... Good luck

Yes I am afraid that your son may be liable if an accident occurs. He should call his insurance to ask what the risk is. Also my hubby's Dr actually sent a report to the Department of Motor Vehicles Lic bureau, who promptly sent a letter to my hubby giving him 30 days to turn his licence in, or find a Doctor who would say it was safe for him to drive. (Not Happening) Even tho Hubby thought I told the Dr to do that and he was mad at me. It was much easier on me not having to tell Hubby he could no longer drive. As farmers there was no way we could sell the vehicles as we need them for the operation of the farm. Hugs and good luck!
